Target: Postpartum adaptation monitoring – early detection of abnormalities – proper care and nutrition advice.
1. Physical growth assessment
- Measure weight, length, head circumference, heart rate, breathing rate.
- Draw the first growth chart.
2. Neurodevelopmental assessment
- Examination of newborn reflexes (sucking, Moro, grasping reflexes…).
- Test response to sound and light.
3. General body examination
- Heart, lungs, abdomen, skin (jaundice), fontanelle, eye, ear, spine, hip joint (dislocation/dysplasia).
- Screening for congenital malformations, congenital heart disease, hernia.
4. Check the function
- Newborn hearing (if not done at birth).
- Eye: Ability to react to strong light.
5. Vaccination & disease prevention
- BCG and hepatitis B vaccination consultation.
6. Comprehensive consultation
- Instructions for breastfeeding, sleep, micronutrient supplementation, bathing, eye-nose-mouth care, umbilical cord hygiene, safe sleep, preventing the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), prevent disease transmission….
- Instruct on danger signs that require immediate medical attention for children.
7. Testing & paraclinical necessary
- Newborn disease screening (heel blood if not done yet).
- Jaundice test, abdominal ultrasound, hip ultrasound, transfontanelle ultrasound
8. Personalized consulting
- Answering questions and reassuring parents who are still confused when taking care of their baby
